Can an employer ask for my bank statement for work?

I got a work as a leaflet distributor and the employer is asking for:

* My National Insurance card

* Passport and

* An up to date bank statement

I understand the other two, but why my bank statement?

Is this probably a scam or something or is it normal to ask for a bank statement?|||They need your account details to pay your wages in, but dont need to know anything about what you have in it|||He is checking that you are eligible to work in the UK and that you have a valid address. A bank statement is a way of checking an address as is a utility bill. Offer a utility bill as a first option. If he insists on a bank statement make sure the account details are blanked out with a felt pen and you would also be justified in blanking out the transactions. If this is not enough just walk away.|||That sounds very sketchy. They might run a credit score to see if you're reliable but not an actual statement.|||I would not provide that (of course I would never take a job placing litter on people's cars or doors either).
